Turn a Birdhouse - Session 1

In this workshop you will enhance your spindle turning skills into making bird house ornaments from selecting wood through: turning the components, mortise & tenon fitment and texturing. Choose from a variety of natural and colored finishes. Pyrography is also an option.
Materials will be supplied but students should bring their own sharp tools (small gouges, skew, parting tool) and safety equipment (face shield/safety glasses, & respirator). Texturing tools will be available for use if participants don't have them. Oneway resharpening jig available on site for resharpening if needed.

In this workshop you’ll learn the ins and outs of creating an end grain goblet, including simple to ornate design, hollowing with a bowl gouge and some decorating techniques. Choose from a variety of natural and colored finishes as well as texturing and pyrography.
Materials will be supplied but participants should bring their own sharp tools (small spindle & bowl gouges, skew, parting tool, bullnose scraper) and safety equipment (face shield/safety glasses, & respirator). Texturing and pyrography tools will be available for participants' use. Oneway sharpening jig available on site for re-sharpening if needed.

This class introduces beginners to the skew chisel, a fundamental but often intimidating tool in woodturning. Students will learn proper tool handling, safety techniques, and basic cuts such as planing and peeling. The focus will be on building confidence, minimizing catches, and achieving smooth surfaces straight from the tool. Through guided practice, students will develop essential skills to incorporate the skew into their turning projects with ease.

Dull tools, catches, tear out? If these problems plague you, here is the HOW for you. In this HOW, I will walk you through how I sharpen tools (gouges and scrapers and skews oh my) and give you the reasons why I do it the way I do. Then you will have a chance to do it yourself. After that, we will do a simple project with your newly sharp tools and talk about why and how catches and tear out happen. Hopefully you will walk away with new skills that will make your woodturning experience that much more enjoyable.

Tired of turning completely round objects? Join Jeff to learn how to create 3, 4 or 5 sided pieces out of a single block of wood and push your work into new areas. During the HOW, you'll create your own 3-sided vessel. In addition, Jeff will explain how to extrapolate the techniques for the 3-sided vessel to objects with 4, 5 or more sides.
